Business Situation
- About 350 farms and orchards supply over 32,000 tons of apples and other fruits to Steirerfrucht
- The fruit is stored at Steirerfrucht before being sorted, packed and sold to national and international retailers
- During the peak harvest period, more than 1,000 tons of products are delivered per day and will be stored according to an evaluation by quality groups
- Steirerfrucht owns more than 150,000 fruit containers, which are continuously circulated and need to be traced
Approach
- The introduction of RFID in the process is enabled by the tagging of each container
- Seamless detection of containers within various inbound and relocation processes
- In addition, there is a continuous inventory via a forklifts, that are equipped with RFID readers
- This has enabled Steirerfrucht to meet the demand for complete traceability of the containers and hence products
RFID UHF transponders are used to identify each container. The identification is done at numerous fixed and mobile reader points. The forklifts can also be identified within the facilities using RFID transponders underneath the floor. The collected data is stored in a central database and is matched with the SAP ERP system. This enables the accurate tracking of the products through each stage of the supply chain.
