Business Situation 

• At the renal car return an external service provider (SP) takes over the cars from the customer.
• The SP checks the cars, cleans them, refuels them and drives them to the park deck to make the car available for the next customer. The car keys, together with the parking lot information need to be brought to the rental counter and manually entered in the car rent system.
• A lot of time gets wasted between providing the car at the park deck and making the car rentable in the system.

Solution Approach

• Active RFID technology from Identec Solutions got applied.
• The cars are equipped with active tags, the tags hold the license plate number information.
• Each parking lot has a marker which sends out a "wake up" signal. In case a car equipped with a tag parks underneath a marker the tag sends the car and the parking lot information to the system.
• The system also provides direction sensitive gates and open space car tracking facilities.

Results

• Minimization of time where cars can not be rented even if they would be available already.
• Simplifying the process by eliminating the manual entering step of parking log information into the rental system.
• Exact tracking of car return time from customers.
• Tracking of service provider's services. It is traceable how long a car has been with the service provider and what services have been applied to each car (cleaning, refueling, technical inspection, …).
• All kind of reports regarding car movements and timings.
