Business Situation

• Steel coils are delivered to Wuppermann by ship.

• The coils are discharged and moved to the storage area by magnetic cranes.

• Each of the coils has individual features, selected coils have to be loaded into a galvanizing plant.

• Target for the feasibility study was to verify that EPC labels can be used for automatic identification of steel coils on the crane.

Solution Approach

• Testing of UHF labels for metal mounting.

• Potential impact of magnet crane required on site investigations.

• Relative movement between tag and reader antenna considers metal environment.

• Read performance is investigated in the RFID/EPCglobal Test CENTER

Results

• In the lab the read performance with varying label positions has been analyzed.

• On site tests with active magnet crane were performed to safeguard the lab results.

• The results showed no negative impact of the magnet crane, no negative impact of the metal environment and reliable read results with labels for metal mounting (Flag Tag Solutions™).

• Due to integrated test platform powered by You-R® OPEN, tests can be repeated at any time.

• Tests with alternative hardware components can be performed and can be compared easily.
